🦈 Shark Tooth Hunting at Leach Beach: A Treasure Hunt by the Sea
If you’re looking for a fun and unique adventure during your Sarasota getaway, head just south to Venice’s Leach Beach, known as the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World.” This stretch of shoreline is famous for the prehistoric shark teeth that wash up daily—making it a natural treasure hunt for kids and adults alike. With niece Christi and her family in town we took them to explore shark tooth hunting.

Why Shark Teeth in Venice?
Years & years ago, this part of Florida was underwater, home to countless sharks of all shapes and sizes. As they shed their teeth, the fossils settled into the sea floor. Thanks to shifting currents and Venice’s unique coastal geography, those teeth still wash ashore today. You can find everything from small black shark teeth the size of a fingernail to larger ones from species like megalodons—though those are rare!
What You’ll Need
You don’t need much to go shark tooth hunting, but a few tools make it even more fun:
- Shark Tooth Sifter or Sand Scoop: Local shops in Venice rent or sell sifters specially designed for this activity.
- Bucket or Mesh Bag: Perfect for carrying your treasures.
- Sunscreen & Water: Florida sun can be intense—stay hydrated and protected.
How to Hunt
The best method is simple: wade ankle- to knee-deep in the surf and scoop up sand and shells with your sifter. Shake gently, and you’ll spot shiny black triangles among the shells. Some people also have great luck just walking the shoreline and keeping an eye on the sand at the water’s edge.
What You Might Find
Most common are black fossilized shark teeth from species like bull sharks, lemon sharks, and tiger sharks. If you’re lucky, you may come across a larger specimen from a great white or even a megalodon, which lived many, many years ago!

A Perfect Family Adventure
Leach Beach is a laid-back spot, less crowded than Siesta Key, making it perfect for families. Kids love the excitement of finding “real fossils” and proudly showing off their collection. It’s like nature’s version of a treasure hunt!
Insider Tips
- Morning is often best, especially after a storm when new treasures wash ashore.
- Bring water shoes—walking in the shells and surf can be rough on bare feet.
- Stop by a local shop afterward—many sell jewelry made from shark teeth if you’d like a special keepsake.
A Souvenir Like No Other
Unlike seashells, shark teeth are legal to collect and make one of the best souvenirs from your Sarasota vacation. Every tooth tells a story of Florida’s prehistoric past, and it’s something you can take home and cherish forever.
So pack up your sunscreen, grab a sifter, and head down to Leach Beach for a day of adventure. You might just discover your very own piece of history beneath the waves.
