Shells, Sunshine, and Island Charm: Our Day Trip to Sanibel Island
We love finding new ways to enjoy Florida’s Gulf Coast, and Sanibel Island is one of those rare places that feels untouched, peaceful, and a little magical. Just a couple hours south of Sarasota, it’s the kind of day trip that feels like a mini-vacation — with incredible beaches, world-famous shelling, and plenty of island charm.
We recently made the trip with Trish’s sister and Rod’s mom, and let’s just say: we’ll be back again.
The Drive: Scenic & Peaceful
Leaving Sarasota in the morning, we grabbed some breakfast & coffee at Cracker Barrel and hit the road for a leisurely drive south. It’s an easy route — mostly highway until you cross the Sanibel Causeway, where the views suddenly open up and the island welcomes you with sparkling blue water and lush greenery.
The drive across the causeway is part of the fun — make sure to roll the windows down and take in that salty air!
Midday: Shelling & Strolling at Bowman’s Beach
Our first stop was Bowman’s Beach, one of Sanibel’s most famous shelling spots. The beach was quiet, wide, and full of seashells — literally everywhere. Sanibel is known as one of the best shelling destinations in the world, thanks to its unique shape and east-west orientation, and it did not disappoint.
We found conch shells, scallops, and sand dollars within minutes — and joined a few other beachgoers doing the famous “Sanibel Stoop” as they searched the shoreline.
The water was calm and crystal-clear, perfect for wading or simply relaxing under an umbrella with a good book.
Afternoon: Nature, Bikes & Boutiques
We spent part of the afternoon exploring the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, a massive sanctuary that’s home to birds, manatees, alligators, and more (we did see several Iguana’s along the road). You can drive the scenic route, rent bikes, or take a guided tour — we opted for a relaxing drive and stopped at a few observation decks along the way.
Before heading home, we browsed a few of the charming local boutiques and galleries near Periwinkle Way — perfect for picking up a shell-themed souvenir or a piece of local art to remember the day
Tips for Visiting Sanibel Island:
- Arrive early — parking is limited at many of the beaches.
- Bring water shoes or sandals — great for walking over shells and rocky spots.
- Pack a shelling bag or bucket (you’ll need it!).
- Don’t forget bug spray and sunscreen — especially if visiting the nature preserve.
- Check for local tide charts — lower tides often bring more shells to shore.
A Coastal Escape Worth the Trip
Sanibel Island is laid-back, natural, and full of charm — and whether you spend a whole weekend or just a day, it’s a place that invites you to slow down and soak it all in.
